If you look at a map of the world, the UK appears to be very small. Geographically it is, but in fact it probably offers more diverse scenery, history and attractions crammed into a small space than anywhere in the world. From Scotland in the North to the tip of Cornwall in the far South West, the UK is packed with exciting things to do and there is no better place to spend a holiday.

The Southern part of the UK enjoys the mildest weather of all and it is here along the South coast that can be found lovely old seaside resorts such as Sidmouth, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Teignmouth, Paignton and Torquay. The beaches in this part of the UK are ideal for families. Budleigh Salterton Beach consists of huge pebbles eroded by the sea from the ancient pebble beds that lie in the cliffs. The beach at Exmouth at the estuary of the River Exe has fine golden sand and a lovely 2-mile promenade making it the ideal spot for a family holiday. Here too you can take boat trips either up the river or along the Jurassic Coast of Devon and Dorset, so called because of the interesting geology and variety of fossils found in the cliffs here.

To the East of the UK are counties such as Norfolk and Lincolnshire. The countryside in this area is very flat and has a low rainfall. It is the perfect part of the UK for a touring holiday as there are many small villages and towns to be explored as well as larger cities such as Lincoln with its medieval cathedral. Boats can be hired on the Norfolk Broads for those who enjoy the water and the relaxation offered by this type of holiday. The coastline to the East has boisterous seaside resorts such as Scarborough and Great Yarmouth with something for all the family.

If you enjoy touring, the UK has so much to see and do. Away from the major roads lie the B roads. In many parts of the UK, these roads are quiet and allow the driver to drive at a more leisurely pace whilst enjoying the scenery. Pubs and inns are abundant in the UK – you are never far from one – and a visit is an ideal way to break your journey.

Holidays in Scotland

You might decide on Scotland with its majestic glens and lochs which are absolutely breathtaking. You can fly to Scotland or you might decide to go by train. However, coach tours regularly visit Scotland and this is an easy way to see the superb countryside without the worry of driving. The Scottish Islands such as The Hebrides and the Orkneys provide magnificent scenery and these are the places for you if you really want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. The wildlife here too is spectacular and you will probably see seals, sea otters and even dolphins.

Holidays in Wales

Wales is much the same. Very few people live in mid Wales and the scenery is breathtaking. Green, rolling hills provide good walking country and a warm Welsh welcome is certain in the little cafes and pubs found here. In fact there are more sheep than people! The North coast of the country has resorts such as Rhyl and Llandudno with entertainment for all the family. The county of Pembrokeshire lies in the far West and the coastline is the UK’s only coastal National Park. For the walker, there is nowhere better. The coastal stretch is particularly well known for the variety of wild flowers that grow here. Off the coast are islands such as Skomer and Skokholm with interesting birdlife.

Holidays in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is fast becoming a tourist area. For centuries visitors have marvelled at the mystery and majesty of the Giant’s Causeway standing at the heart of one of Europe’s most magnificent coastlines. The symmetry of the columns never fails to intrigue visitors. To stroll along the Giant’s Causeway is to travel back in time. For those flying to Northern Ireland, you may wish to consider a car hire option once you arrive.

In fact the UK offers something for everyone all year round. In the winter, why not take a break in a country inn or perhaps a weekend break offered by companies such as Warners with all meals provided and entertainment each evening. In summer, visit one of the many coastal resorts or escape to the countryside on a cycling or walking holiday. Hire a cottage by the sea or go camping. The choice is yours. There are so many aspects to the UK that to see it all in one holiday is impossible.
